Having knocked Everton out of the FA Cup on Friday, Manchester United face League One side Charlton Athletic for a place in the Carabao Cup last four.
United haven’t won a trophy since the 2016/17 season when they lifted both the Carabao Cup and Europa League and manager Erik ten Hag will see this competition, as indeed he will the FA Cup, a great opportunity to end the drought – especially whilst not ready for a Premier League challenge.
For a period in the early 2000s, this was a regular Premier League fixture. But the pair haven’t played each other in the nearly 16 years since Charlton were relegated from the top flight in 2007.
The Addicks have finished no higher than 9th in the Championship during their time away and have been up and down between the second and third tiers. They began their current League One stint upon relegation from the Championship in 2020.
As things stand, Charlton are 12th in League One after a mixed first half of the league season. In the FA Cup, they were knocked out by lower league Stockport County, but went on to beat Premier League Brighton on penalties to reach the quarter-finals here.

Man Utd team news
Bruno Fernandes is suspended and will sit this one out following an accumulation of two previous yellow cards in this competition.
Ten Hag will also switch things up in goal, already confirming he plans to rest David de Gea and will pick between veteran back-up Tom Heaton and new loan signing Jack Butland.
Donny van de Beek is missing through injury, with Jadon Sancho also still out. But young talents Facundo Pellistri, Kobbie Mainoo and Zidane Iqbal could all make the squad.
Man Utd Starting 11 (4-2-3-1): Heaton; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Martinez, Malacia; McTominay, Fred; Antony, Eriksen, Garnacho; Martial.
Even with a degree of rotation, Manchester United are the heavy favourites here. It should given Ten Hag the oportunity to hand minutes to some players who have been lacking without compromising quality to the point where this is anything other than comfortable for his team.
Prediction: Man Utd 2-0 Charlton
