Counsel young doctors, HoS advises NMA

Folasade Yemi-Esan

As a panacea to the perennial brain drain occasioned by young Medical Doctors seeking greener pastures abroad, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, has advised the Nigerian Medical Association to ensure that young resident doctors are counselled.

She stressed that they needed to be reminded that it was not a bed of roses out there, adding that the Nigerian government had done a lot for them by sponsoring their education.

Dr Yemi-Esan stated this during the courtesy visit by the NMA in Abuja.

In a statement on Wednesday by M. A. Ahmed, the Deputy Director, Communications, the HoS was said to have expressed fear that the rate at which resident doctors travelled abroad to practice without serving the country was a cause for concern, stating that the Nigerian Medical Association was a good platform to counsel them. She added that Nigerian doctors, abroad, were underpriced when compared to their counterparts from other countries due to their large numbers.

While responding to their demands of increased hazard allowances, Dr Yemi-Esan enjoined them to be reasonable and enquired if the Resident Doctors, who were in public corporations were also doing hazardous work. She added that government had done a lot for them, cautioning that they should be considerate in their demands, having in mind dwindling government revenue and, most importantly, value addition to the polity.

Earlier, the President of the NMA, Dr Uche Ojinmah, commended Dr Yemi-Esan for her reformative contributions in positively repositioning the Federal Civil Service for greater performance and national economic growth.
