Welcome to Naija News compilation of the latest news on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike for today, 12th July 2022.

Naija News reports that universities lecturers have been on strike since February 14, 2022 over unresolved issues with the federal government.

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reconsider their position on the prolonged strike, expressing worry that the hiatus will have generational consequences on families, the educational system and future development of the country.

Naija News reports that Buhari made this known on Monday in Daura, Katsina, when he received some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders at his residence.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said the strike had already taken a toll on the psychology of parents, students and other stakeholders, throwing up many moral issues that already beg for attention.

He noted that the future of the country rests on the quality of educational institutions and education, while assuring that the government understands their position, and negotiations should continue, with students in lecture halls.

The Federal Government has said that it is committed to ending the strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) soonest.

Naija News reports that the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Opiah, assured the students, parents and ASUU members that the disagreement would end soon.

Opiah gave the assurance in Owerri at the weekend while speaking with reporters during a reception organized in his honour by his friends.

“I can assure you that government is very concerned about the situation. Even as I speak to you now a lot of thinking, a lot of discussions and meetings are going on with a view to resolving the matter as quickly as possible.

“I am hopeful that the disagreement between Government and ASUU will be resolved soon so that our children can go back to school,” he said.

Former President of the Nigerian Senate, Abubakar Bukola Saraki has blamed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the lingering strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Naija News reports that public universities in Nigeria have been shut down for months over disagreements between the federal government and ASUU executives.

Addressing a press after Eid-el-Kabir prayers in Ilorin, Kwara State capital on Saturday, Saraki who lost the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential primary election former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, said the ASUU strike would not have lingered if it was the PDP in power.

He stressed that there was no way the strike will remain this long either in his capacity as the Senate President or as the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum.
