Arsenal defenders Leah Williamson & Rafaelle Souza out for ‘several weeks’

Arsenal defender Leah Williamson is set to miss ‘several weeks’ with a foot injury suffered in England training during this month’s international break.

Gunners teammate Rafaelle Souza is also nursing a foot problem and will be sidelined for a similar amount of time.

“Both are foot injuries,” manager Jonas Eidevall told Sky Sports ahead of this weekend’s WSL clash with Reading.

“Both are expected to be out for several weeks. [We] can’t put an exact time frame on those until they have seen the consultants here. We need to give that a bit of time so we can have a better prognosis,” the Swedish coach added.

The double loss is a significant blow for Arsenal, with Williamson and Rafaelle the centre-back partnership Eidevall has used in the WSL so far this season.

The Gunners are yet to concede a domestic goal two games in, keeping clean sheets against Brighton and Tottenham. But it will have to be a different defensive unit that lines up against Reading, as well as for at least the rest of the month in what is now a very busy period for Arsenal.

Three days after the Reading game, the Gunners are in France to face Lyon in the Champions League. They will then face Liverpool, Zurich and West Ham all before the end of the month.

Lotte Wubben-Moy and Jennifer Beattie would be the obvious pair to step in, although Steph Catley has also been known to play in the centre of defence after filling in last season.
