The Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu has warned that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) might just throw up some surprises in the 2023 election.
Uzor Kalu in a statement on Friday pointed out that the NNPP has been receiving some high profile defections and the failure of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to choose its 2023 presidential candidate from the right region may just spell political doom for both parties.
He reiterated that in the interest of justice and fairness, the southeast or the northeast should produce the next Nigerian President but should the PDP and APC fail to follow this line, the NNPP might just become the party to beat in 2023 with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as its presidential candidate.
“The recent high profile defections to the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, especially in the north-west geo-political zone should not be taken for granted by our great party, the All Progressives Congress ( APC),” he said.
“I’m using this opportunity to reiterate my earlier position that the presidency should go [to] north-east if it can’t be conceded to the south-east for equity and fairness.
“The silent majority who have a working conscience could protest this injustice by supporting Engr. Rabiu Kwankwaso to clinch the presidential seat in 2023 if our party, the APC, and the opposition PDP field their candidates from any other zone aside south-east or north-east.
“It is time to unite and rally around a zone that has not produced the nation’s president since the rotation convention dispensation that began in 1999.”
Naija News recalls that Kwankwaso after dumping the PDP to join the NNPP has since declared his 2023 presidential ambition.
On Friday 13th May, a former member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin also officially joined the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Jibrin is an ally of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and until his decision to dump the APC, was the Director-General of his presidential campaign support groups.
