When did Leicester last win the League Cup?

The miracle workers have defied the odds time and time again ever since Nigel Pearson guided them to Premier League safety in 2015.

An unthinkable 5,000/1 title victory ensued under Claudio Ranieri before Brendan Rodgers helped the Foxes emerge as a persistent Premier League protagonist. The club has reached extraordinary heights in recent years, but there are fears that Rodgers’ impressive reign is slowly drawing to a close.

Leicester are struggling in the Premier League, but a chance of silverware has presented itself in the form of the Carabao Cup. However, a difficult quarter-final tie is on the horizon as they make the trip up to St. James’ Park on Tuesday night.

The League Cup is a competition the Foxes haven’t come close to tasting victory in over the past 20 years. In fact, they’ve reached the semi-finals just once (2019/20) since they last lifted the trophy.

Here’s a reminder of Leicester’s most recent League Cup triumph.

Leicester have garnered success in the Premier League (2015/16) and FA Cup (2020/21) in recent years, but their last taste of League Cup glory arrived in 2000 when the competition was sponsored by Worthington’s.

Their memorable cup campaign at the turn of the Millennium was dominated by an unlikely protagonist. Bruising defender Matt Elliott scored the only goal in Leicester’s two-legged semi-final against Aston Villa before he netted a brace in the final against second-tier outfit Tranmere Rovers.

Elliott’s superb headed opener was cancelled out with 13 minutes remaining by Ned Kelly, but Leicester quickly regained the lead through that man Elliott who nodded home Steve Guppy’s inswinging corner.

The Foxes’ triumph was the culmination of a hugely enjoyable period in the League Cup at the end of the 20th century where they twice lifted the trophy and were also beaten finalists.
