Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Saturday night dropped his ambition to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, asked his supporters to instead back the ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The Sokoto State governor announced he was withdrawing from the presidential race at the Special National Convention of the PDP holding at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
His stepping down for Atiku has come as a surprise to many because Tambuwal is generally seen as an ally to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.
Recall that Wike had in 2018 backed backed Watch failed presidential bid of Tambuwal.
