The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been ordered to call off its nationwide industrial strike.

The varsity staff union were ordered by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) on Wednesday, September 21, to reopen all public universities and return to their duty posts after seven months of shutting down the learning institutions.

Naija News understands that the NICN directive was coming following a petition before the court by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, on behalf of the federal government.

Recall that students of public universities across the country have been at home since February 14, 2022, when ASUU press home its demands for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

Despite a series of meetings, ASUU and the Federal Government could not reach a good end.

Naija News learned that the Wike camp made the decisions at a strategic meeting held in Port Harcourt in the early hours of Wednesday.

It was gathered that the Wike Camp decided to hold the meeting following the vote of confidence passed on Ayu as the party’s national chairman by the National Executive Committee (NEC) despite their demand for his resignation.

Naija News reports he stated this on Wednesday during an interview with Arise TV while speaking on the lingering ASUU strike which commenced on February 14.

He however cautioned the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) not to take law into their own hands as part of efforts to see an end to the strike action.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the decision of some party stalwarts to pull away from his campaign.

The group’s position was disclosed by a former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Olabode George, after hours of meeting, which started Tuesday evening and ended Wednesday morning.

Reacting to the move from the party members, Atiku said he was surprised by their withdrawal because apart from the Rivers chapter, all other states submitted names of people who they wanted in the Presidential Campaign Council.

In a statement on Wednesday, the former vice president reiterated that the national chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu will only be removed from his position if the law in the party allows it.

Speaking further, Atiku explained that the nation is currently going through a phase of insecurity, economic meltdown, disunity and mutual mistrust and educational dislocations which should be the point of focus for the time being.

He urged everyone in the party to come together and join him in addressing the ills in the society and turn the country around.

Atiku urged PDP members that have stated their resolve to withdraw from the Presidential Campaign Council to rethink and retrace their steps.

The Justice subsequently restrained the union from the industrial action pending the determination of the main case bordering on the terms of agreement between the two parties ( FG and ASUU).

Speaking to newsmen, Falana, who was represented in court by Dr. Odorche Edor, said ASUU’s legal team will adopt its next line of action after going through the ruling.

A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said the Muslim-Muslim ticket fielded by the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 presential election will fail.

Dogara stated that the presidential candidate of APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, failed to listen to the national outcry regarding the same faith ticket and also dismissed the consequences of the action.

He said this in Abuja on Tuesday at a summit tagged, ‘Meet The Church,’ organised by the Nigeria National Christian Coalition with the theme: ‘The role of the church in nation-building’.
