Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Saturday, 25th June, 2022

Good morning Nigeria, welcome to Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today Saturday, 25th June 2022.

The enthusiasm of young Nigerians in deciding the next president of the country is not one many saw coming. Many never expected that a day would come when “lazy” Nigerian youth would stage a protest to force the hands of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make it easier for them to register as prospective voters. The frenzied quest by a section of the population who have never voted all their life to do so in 2023 has been dismissed by entrenched politicians as a mere fad rather than the revolution it rightly is. However, the fact remains since the commencement of the fourth Republic in 1999, this is the first INEC will be faced with such a surge for the permanent voter card (PVC).

On Tuesday, chants of “INEC, give us more machines,” “PVC is our right,” “INEC has been joking with us, the registration is slow” rented the air in Enugu as protesters in their thousands marched from Okpara Square to the state office of the INEC, where they demanded the deployment of more machines to allow people to register and have their voter cards. They decried a situation where only two devices are meant to serve each local government area. One of the protesters, Ezeaputa Ike, told newsmen that “it is unfair that the INEC is frustrating the efforts of young Nigerians who had woken up and are willing to participate in the political process to change the bad governance in the country.” Indeed, Nigerian youth have woken up. Before now, INEC was overwhelmed by the thousands of youths who trooped out for the CVR in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, and at the Old Parade Ground in Garki, Abuja.

The Supreme Court has dismissed the suit seeking to void the provision of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022.

Naija News earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, had on April 29 filed a suit before the apex court challenging the constitutionality of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act.

In a judgment on Friday, the apex court ruled that President Buhari could not seek to fault its provisions of the electoral act after participating in the law-making by assenting to it.

A seven-member panel of the apex court, headed by Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed, gave the unanimous judgment on Friday.

Viral reports claiming that close to two billion Naira cash were recovered from the house of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, have been faulted by the accused, Naija News reports.

It was reported earlier that operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, stormed the former COAS home in Wuse, Abuja, and recovered a load of cash to the tune of N1.85 billion and some other items.

According to reports, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) had alerted the ICPC when it commenced a probe of an alleged military contractor named Salisu.

The massive defections currently rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) may not come to an end any time soon, with opposition parties snapping up members of the ruling party.

Hon. Abubakar Sarki Dahiru, representing Lafia/Obi federal constituency, has become the latest member of the ruling party to announce his resignation.

Naija News exclusively gathered that Hon. Dahiru is plotting to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

A reliable source told this newspaper that Dahiru, who haven’t officially announced his new party, may pitch his tent with Hon. Ahmed Wadada, a former House of Representatives member and prominent member of the APC and Hon. Jonathan Gaza, a two-term serving member of the House of Representatives representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency, who recently joined the SDP.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has declared that the Abuja house recently raided by its operatives doesn’t belong to former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.

The ICPC spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua made the clarification in a statement on Friday made available to Naija News.

He said contrary to earlier reports, the house actually belongs to a military contractor who is the owner of K Salam Construction Company and urged members of the public to disregard inaccurate reports about what transpired.

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has proceeded on his annual leave and has transferred powers to his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, to act in his stead while he is away.

This was made known in a statement sent to Naija News Friday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie.

Osagie said Obaseki has written to the Edo State Assembly to intimate the House of the development.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of displaying hatred towards Igbos in the country.

It also accused Buhari and the presidency of interfering in an ongoing court case against its leader, Nnamdi Kanu while also attempting to intimidate members of the group.

The group, therefore, called on the President to stop the open display of ignorance and hatred towards the Igbo people.

Controversial Nollywood actress and philanthropist, Tonto Dikeh has reportedly been picked as running mate to Tonte Ibraye, the Governorship candidate of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State, for the 2023 election.

The actress took to her Instagram page, a few minutes ago to make the announcement alongside their campaign poster with the hashtag ‘Rivers Rescue Mission 2023’.

Tonto Dikeh expressed appreciation to the Governorship candidate, stating that they are looking forward to investing massively in social protection, creating social value for young people and increasing women’s inclusion in the governance system.

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government has hinted that it is planning a possible salary increase for federal workers across the country.

President Buhari gave the hint on Thursday at the inauguration of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP) and cultural change video in Abuja.

The President, who is in Rwanda attending the ongoing 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, was represented by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mohammed Bello.

The presidency has warned bishops, pastors and imams against spewing speeches that could incite hatred from the pulpit.

Femi Adesina, spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari in his write up said President Buhari, on the sideline of the 26th edition of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), visited the genocide museum in Rwanda where almost a million Tutsis were killed in a genocide by the Hutus because of hatred.

He urged clergymen to desist from inciting the public with hate speech and see what it did to Rwanda. He added that hatred could end up destroying the country.
