The enthusiasm of young Nigerians in deciding the next president of the country is not one many saw coming. Many never expected that a day would come when “lazy” Nigerian youth would stage a protest to force the hands of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make it easier for them to register as prospective voters. The frenzied quest by a section of the population who have never voted all their life to do so in 2023 has been dismissed by entrenched politicians as a mere fad rather than the revolution it rightly is. However, the fact remains since the commencement of the fourth Republic in 1999, this is the first INEC will be faced with such a surge for the permanent voter card (PVC).
On Tuesday, chants of “INEC, give us more machines,” “PVC is our right,” “INEC has been joking with us, the registration is slow” rented the air in Enugu as protesters in their thousands marched from Okpara Square to the state office of the INEC, where they demanded the deployment of more machines to allow people to register and have their voter cards. They decried a situation where only two devices are meant to serve each local government area. One of the protesters, Ezeaputa Ike, told newsmen that “it is unfair that the INEC is frustrating the efforts of young Nigerians who had woken up and are willing to participate in the political process to change the bad governance in the country.” Indeed, Nigerian youth have woken up. Before now, INEC was overwhelmed by the thousands of youths who trooped out for the CVR in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, and at the Old Parade Ground in Garki, Abuja.
The Supreme Court has dismissed the suit seeking to void the provision of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022.
Naija News earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, had on April 29 filed a suit before the apex court challenging the constitutionality of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act.
In a judgment on Friday, the apex court ruled that President Buhari could not seek to fault its provisions of the electoral act after participating in the law-making by assenting to it.
A seven-member panel of the apex court, headed by Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed, gave the unanimous judgment on Friday.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has declared that the Abuja house recently raided by its operatives doesn’t belong to former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.
The ICPC spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua made the clarification in a statement on Friday made available to Naija News.
He said contrary to earlier reports, the house actually belongs to a military contractor who is the owner of K Salam Construction Company and urged members of the public to disregard inaccurate reports about what transpired.
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has proceeded on his annual leave and has transferred powers to his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, to act in his stead while he is away.
This was made known in a statement sent to Naija News Friday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie.
Osagie said Obaseki has written to the Edo State Assembly to intimate the House of the development.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of displaying hatred towards Igbos in the country.
