President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday visited Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on a one-day working visit.

The President’s aircraft landed at the Airforce Wing of the Maiduguri International Airport, at about 12 noon amidst tight security and drizzling rain.

President Buhari was received by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Kashim Shettima, Senator representing Southern Borno, Ali Ndume, among other dignitaries.

Buhari proceeded to the newly constructed Teachers Quarters in Bulumkutu ward of the metropolis and commissioned the project executed by Governor Zulum’s administration.

The President also inaugurated the Teachers Quarters, which consists of 24 flats within six duplexes and part of over 600 capital projects executed in the three years of Zulum’s administration.

Immediately after the commissioning of the Teachers Quarters, Buhari proceeded to pay homage to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Al -Amin Elkanemi, at his palace.

The Federal Government has advised Nigerian students to sue the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the lingering strike.

Naija News reports that the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said this on Thursday at the Ministerial Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister urged the students to drag ASUU leadership before a court to claim damages incurred over the strike period.

Adamu asserted that the union must compensate students for the closure of public institutions for six months and for the time wasted during the strike period.

The minister added that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government bears no liability to compensate millions of students grounded for six months over lost time.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has revealed why it rejected the new offer made by the Federal Government.

In a statement on Thursday signed by its President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU said it rejected the offer because it was miserable and untenable.

Osodeke added that the major reason, which is the paucity of revenue, given by the Federal Government for the offer is not accepted by the union.

The ASUU President accused the government of allowing the ongoing strike action to linger because of its provocative indifference.

The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos State Government has extended the ban on commercial motorcycle ‘Okada’ to four more Local Govt Areas and six Local Council Development Areas.

The Lagos State Governor on Thursday directed full enforcement from September 1, 2022.

The councils affected by the Okada ban include Kosofe Local Government, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Shomolu Local Government, and Mushin Local Government.

Others are Ikosi-Isherri LCDA, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Isolo LCDA, Bariga LCDA, and Odi-Olowo LCDA.

Sanwo-Olu said the Government decided in line with the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

He further stated that the decision will address the chaos and menace created by the operations of Okada in the listed areas.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has struck out a suit seeking the disqualification of Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last July 26 election.

Naija News reports that the suit was struck out on Thursday on the basis that the plaintiff lacked the locus standi to institute the case.

The plaintiff, Awoyemi Oluwatayo Lukman, had filed charges against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the PDP and Adeleke.

Lukman prayed the court to render null and void the submission of Adeleke’s name to INEC on grounds of alleged unlawful action.

The grouse of the plaintiff was that Adeleke’s name was hurriedly submitted by PDP on March 11 as against between March 14 to 18 as contained in the INEC guidelines.

Adeleke’s name having not been submitted within the period fixed by INEC, the plaintiff asked the court to declare the submission, illegal, unlawful, null, and void and be set aside.

The Federal Government has accused some Northern Governors of destroying education at the primary school level through bad policy.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, made the accusation during a Ministerial Media Briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Adamu, who was flanked by the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Opia, said basic education in several northern states has failed due to poor policy by the governors.

He asserted that his efforts as the minister will amount to nothing if the foundational education system is already bad and cannot be remedied.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees Chairman, Walid Jibrin, has advised the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to immediately reconcile their differences.

In a statement on Thursday, Jibrin advised Atiku and Wike alongside their camps to close ranks and sheath their sword in the interest of the party.

He also urged camps of both politicians to remain calm and never create confusion about the state of the party, adding that they should allow efforts to resolve the party’s internal crisis to materialise.

The BoT chairman noted that it was time both camps see the internal crisis as a “misunderstanding” and not a “problem”.

He, however, advised the camps of both politicians to give strong support to the present reconciliation committee set up to resolve all issues in the party.

Emirates Airlines have announced the suspension of all flights in and out of Nigeria effective from September 1, 2022.

Naija News reports that the airline made this known in a statement to journalists on Thursday morning.

It was gathered that the decision to suspend its flights was due to the failure of Emirates Airlines to repatriate its trapped ticket sales fund in Nigeria back to its home country in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Some weeks back, Emirates said it would reduce the number of times it frequents Nigeria from 11 to 7 per week.

The Nigerian government has been under pressure due to blocked funds belonging to foreign airlines, which have hit over $500m.

Emirates alone has $85 million in trapped funds.

The Lagos State Police Command has denied putting Lagos on any form of lockdown due to threats of insecurity.

The clarification was made on Thursday by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi who urged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.

Alabi explained that entry and exit points in Lagos are being closely monitored by security agencies to forestall any security breach but the state is not on any kind of lockdown.

He added that the increased presence of police officers carrying out stop and search duties is a proactive and preventive measure to nip crime in the bud.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Adamu has described the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the ruling party as the best option in 2023.
Adamu stated that politicians can not convince everyone, adding that everyone had the right to support what they want.

He further stated that the APC will not relent until it convinces Nigerians to fully support its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima.

The APC Chairman said the same faith ticket is the best strategy that they think can work for them in the forthcoming election.

Adamu also accused the media of not publicising the efforts of the government adequately but reporting the security challenges.
