Thiago Almada makes history as first MLS player to represent Argentina at World Cup

After watching on as an unused substitute for two matches, Thiago Almada finally made his World Cup debut in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Poland on Wednesday.

The Atlanta United playmaker replaced Alexis Mac Allister in the 86th minute as La Albiceleste sealed their place in the knockout rounds with a convincing victory over a Polish side that still finished second in Group C.

Despite limited minutes, Almada – who only made Lionel Scaloni’s roster as a late injury replacement -made quite the impression, having 15 touches of the ball and completing all 13 of his passes while creating one big chance.

Almada’s introduction was a historic moment, with the 21-year-old becoming the first MLS player to represent Argentina at a World Cup.

Wednesday’s landmark performance comes off the back of Almada – the most expensive incoming transfer in MLS history – enjoying a strong debut season with Atlanta United, scoring seven goals and setting up another seven in 31 appearances across all competitions, despite the Five Stripes failing to make the MLS Cup Playoffs.
