The Informant247 has unveiled winners of the first edition of its national essay competition for undergraduate students.

The medium, disclosing this in a series of tweets on its official Twitter handle, said the essay competition was organised to test the creative writing abilities of undergraduates and encourage campus journalism in Nigeria.

It added that 3 outstanding essays emerged out of the numerous entries received and evaluated by independent assessors.

The tweets read, “We greatly appreciate the efforts of everyone who participated in this competition. We had a large amount of detailed, original and intriguing submissions. The topics addressed in the essays were wide-ranging – governance, representation, education, business, tax regulation, sports betting, democracy, health, ecology, social media censorship, and technology.

“However, the standard was very high and the decisions surrounding the final selection were very difficult. With the help of the scholars that served as our judges, though far from easy, we were able to narrow the submissions down to three winners.”

According to the medium, Oluwadamilola Akintewe of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State emerged as the overall winner, having scored 8.4 points, and was followed by Paul-Osagie Rhoda of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State with 7.8 points and Saheed Olajumoke Ayoola of Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State with 7.5 points.

It added that the essays were made anonymous and assessed by the judges based on the set of criteria, including content, creativity, thoughtfulness, clarity of arguments, grammar and structure.

The medium said the 3 winners would get a cash prize of N100,000 and letters of recognition.
