The difference between Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona in the GOAT debate

Kieron Dyer has said he is ‘sitting on the fence’ in the debate about who the greatest ever player is between Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.

Messi matched his idol by winning the 2022 World Cup. He scored six goals in the tournament, including two in the final against France, as Argentina won in Qatar.

Many believe Messi becoming a World Cup winner has now ended the debate over who the greatest player of all time is, with Maradona, Pele and Cristiano Rinaldo still have their advocates.

Former England international Dyer, though, does not think it is a simple question to answer, although he has narrowed it down to the two Argentinian legends.

“Maradona basically won the World Cup, and [Serie A] for Napoli on his own,” Dyer said on 90min’s World Cup show. “Honestly, it was scary to witness. But then I also think a career should be taken into longevity.

“So when you’re talking about Maradona, probably out of prime three, [but] Messi’s had a prime for 20 years. Yeah, 20 years at the top level is ridiculous.

“So I sit on the fence in a way. I think that Maradona is probably the greatest player that has ever played football on this planet. But the greatest of all time has to be Messi because of how long he’s done it [for].”
