More details have emerged from the terror attack on Kuje Medium Correctional Center in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Tuesday night.
Recall that the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists had invaded the prison facility and released not less than 600 prisoners.
The ISWAP terrorists bombed the facility’s fence and razed seven vehicles before gaining entry into the cells to free 15 commanders and other inmates.
A soldier posted to Kuje prison said that the terrorist attacked the facility with General-purpose Machine Guns (GMP), grenades and other explosives.
In a chat with TheCable, the army officer revealed that the guns carried by the security operatives were no match for the sophisticated firearms wielded by the terrorists.
The soldier added that explosives were used to bomb the part of the facility where the inmates were kept.
Speaking further, the army officer disclosed that 30 soldiers were deployed to the prison facility less than 24 hours before the attackers arrived.
He said, according to practice, soldiers guarding the facility are always redeployed every month and that his batch had yet to be familiarised with the area before the attackers struck.
Naija News had reported that soldiers attached to the Correctional Centre were removed and redeployed hours before Boko Haram terrorists attacked the facility.
Security sources have revealed to Vanguard that soldiers deployed to Kuje vicinity and the Correctional Center’s environment, who had mastered the terrain and acclimatized, were moved out before the attack.
It was, however, gathered that the period the soldiers were supposed to stay in that deployment had elapsed, and they were due for rotation.
Security sources revealed that the terrorists were able to beat checkpoints mounted by security agencies through the use of motorcycles.
