Tension As INEC Goes On Break Before Announcing Final Gov Election Result In Kano State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) returning officer for the governorship election in Kano State has declared a 2-hours break before the declaration of the final result.

However, Naija News reports the candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party NNPP), Abba Bichi Yusuf is expected to be declared the winner having already established an unassailable lead in the results so far declared.

After the result of the last Local Government Area was announced, Yusuf polled 53,794 votes in Dala LGA to secure a major lead above Nasir Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 28,880 votes in the LGA.

Supporters of the NNPP had started jubilating that the party secured the highest votes cast in the election but the returning officer, Professor Ahmad Doko Ibrahim, announced that he needed at least two hours to make the final pronouncement.

This raised suspicion among some party agents and supporters who asked questions from the electoral officials.

Ibrahim had earlier displayed the documents to be used for the final collation, showing that they were blank.

However, he insisted that he needed at least two hours to put things in order, especially as it relates to all issues leading to cancelled votes.

When the returning officer moved to a corner to fill out the form, party supporters charged at him, forcing him to return to his former position.

Alongside, an INEC National Commissioner in the hall, efforts were made to boost the confidence of party agents and supporters.

However, the Kano Commissioner of Police arrived at the collation center in order to calm nerves and ensure that the exercise is concluded peacefully.

In 2019, the NNPP was leading in Kano when the election was declared inconclusive and a rerun was fixed which the APC eventually won the election.

It is not yet clear if the 2023 election would end on the first ballot or would be declared inconclusive.
