Suspect arrested after security guard killed outside Qatar's embassy in Paris

A security guard working at the Qatari Embassy in Paris was killed on Monday morning, staff have confirmed. A suspect was arrested shortly afterwards.

In a post on Twitter, the Embassy wrote: “In a heinous and unjustified crime, a security guard was killed this morning. The police quickly arrested the suspect and opened an investigation.

“The Embassy expresses its deep sorrow and grief over this crime and extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family.”

An altercation is understood to have taken place between two men in front of the embassy in the city’s 8th arrondissement shortly before 7am.

In a short statement on the incident, the Paris prosecutor’s office said: “The circumstances of the death of the security guard are yet to be determined precisely”.

It added that “use of a weapon” by the alleged perpetrator was “not confirmed”. Another source that spoke to Reuters said the killing did not appear to have been a terrorist act and the guard died after being punched.
