Super Eagles’ Calvin Bassey linked with Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig

Super Eagles' Calvin Bassey linked with Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig

Former Motherwell defender Stephen Craigan believes that the German top-flight represents an ideal destination for the Nigerian international this summer.

Whilst speaking on the Go Radio Football Show as reported by Football Scotland, Craigan noted that clubs such as Dortmund and Leipzig have the financial ability to match Rangers’ £20m valuation of Bassey.

Craigan said: “If someone is willing to come in and pay £25million, that’s what he is worth. Looking at Calvin Bassey and his performances, particularly against Dortmund and Leipzig.

“I would be very surprised if there wasn’t German clubs looking at him. The German market is strong and they don’t mind spending £18-£20million on a younger player.

The former Northern Ireland coach noted that signing Bassey would represent good business for Dortmund since the Black and Yellows make a tidy profit on the Super Eagles star in the next few years, much like they did with Erling Haaland.

“You think even about Erling Haaland when he came in, Dortmund are a club that are willing to spend that thinking they can get the £50-£60million when they sell them on,” Craigan explained.

“His performances against Dortmund and Leipzig will have opened the eyes of German clubs, who will think ‘can we pinch him? Can we bring him in?”

The 45-year-old former defender also argued that moving to the German Bundesliga would be an ideal middle point for Bassey before securing a move to the Premier League later.

Craigan explained that moving to a top Premier League club now might limit his playing time and he (Bassey) could use the German league as a ‘stepping stone.’

Craigan said: “He doesn’t want to go to a club and not play. I just wonder if there is a stepping stone somewhere else before he goes to the English Premier League.

“The link is natural with Steven Gerrard, and he was sensational over the last few months of the season.”

Bassey is currently with the Nigerian national team as they prepare to face the Leone Stars in Sierra Leone in their first AFCON 2023 qualifier at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Thursday, June 9.

The 22-year-old centre-back featured 50 times for Rangers during the 2021/22 season, notching six (6) assists for the Gers and starting the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
