Mr Erastus Awortu, Chairman, Andoni local government area in Rivers did not allow the current state of the nation’s economy deter him from delivering on his campaign promises to his constituents; he rather displayed prudence which has earned him laudable achievements in his first 100 days in office.
Sworn in on June 17, Awortu is barely four months old as Chairman of the council. Until his election, he was a practicing lawyer and a Special Adviser to Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Matters.
In the area of security, the first move he made on assumption was to take measures to tackle a neck-deep security problem he inherited from his predicessor. It relates to a cult related crises that lead to displacement of over nine communities in the Isiokwaan District of the area.
This crises affected communities of Dema, Ibot-irem, Samanga, Ajakajak, Ogbonte, Otuafu, Otunria, udung-ama, isiobi-ama and made its inhabitants to become refugees in neighboring Khana local government area.
During the crises, affected communities suffered loss of lives and properties worth millions of Naira while schools and other social services were disrupted.
Part of his first official task was his benevolence to the displaced persons when he visited their camps with relief materials comprising of food items and other deliverables while assuring on their safe return.
Backed by the state government, the security agencies and traditional rulers, the council boss initiated a successful collaboration which lead to sustainable peace and return of displaced persons to their ancestral homes and today normalcy has returned to the area.
Drinking from conterminated wells and ponds were a major cause of cholera outbreaks in Andoni area council. Determined to end cholera in the area, the administration has completed a 20,000 gallon capacity galvanized steel overhead water tank, 6 industrial borehole with 2HP water treatment plant and a solar panel to guarantee regular water supply across the Isiokwaan District starting from Ibot-irem Community.
Part of his campaign promise was to build infrastructure so as to encourage local economy across communities in the area. On that note, the Awortu lead administration in its first 100 days in office successfully completed a 183m road traversing Egwede and Agana Communities, while several other roads have already been earmarked for construction or rehabilitation.
Awortu has also given a face lift to other government infrastructures like the Education Authority Building and the Old Legislative building at Ngo the council’s headquarters, while the office of the Chairman and administrative chamber of the council have also been upgraded.
The Awortu lead administration will continue to show determination and support for human capacity development of his constituents. On assumption in office, he fulfilled one of his campaign promises by endorsing a scholarship for 15 students in the area who are currently undergoing a two years Basic certificate Training as Navy Officers and Marine Engineers with a view of making them employable in the maritime sector.
The council boss has continued to initiate collaborations with oil companies operating in the area to ensure that they deliver on their corporate social responsibilities and also ensure that indegent youths benefit from their employments.
As a true grassroots administrator, the council boss has demonstrated his support for inclusiveness as he ensured that the new councilors in his regime were armed with requisite knowledge to carry out their legistlative functions in line with the local government laws.
The Awortu administration also procured and distributed a Venza SUV and 11 Toyota Corolla vehicles to the Vice-Chairman and 11 councilors in the area council to make them more effective and efficient in their duties.
The council boss also ensured steady power supply within the council headquarters and its environs and refurbished 2 official vehicles abandoned by the past administration.
