San Jose Earthquakes legend Shea Salinas to retire after 2022 MLS season

San Jose Earthquakes legend Shea Salinas is set to retire from professional soccer at the end of the 2022 MLS season, the club have announced.

Salinas, 36, has enjoyed a 15-year career in Major League Soccer that includes 13 years with the Quakes, as well as spells with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Philadelphia Union.

The veteran winger ranks 10th for all-time MLS appearances (374) while he’s played 350 times for the Quakes across all competitions, scoring 22 goals and providing 50 assists.

“I am so grateful for the 15 years I got to play professional soccer. It was 15 more years than I had ever expected. I’m thankful for all of the gifts, opportunities, and people God put in my life to make this happen and to shape me along the way,” said Salinas.

“I want to especially thank the San Jose Earthquakes club, fans, community, and my teammates that have supported and encouraged me so well along the way. Lastly, this adventure has only been possible because I get to share it with my amazing wife and family. I am excited to see where God will use me next.”

Salinas was the 15th overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and spent one full year with the Quakes before going on to represent the Union and Whitecaps. He then returned to San Jose in 2012 and has remained with the club ever since, helping them win one Supporters’ Shield title while reaching the MLS Cup Playoffs three times.

“Few players in Major League Soccer history have made the lasting impact that Shea Salinas has,” general manager Chris Leitch said in a club press release. “The longevity, durability, and consistency he has displayed over his 15 seasons in MLS is remarkable. Even more important is the positive attitude with which he impacted each and every locker room he was a part of, and the desire he had to give back to our local community. We’re proud that Shea was a member of our club for 13 seasons.”

The Quakes currently sit bottom of the Western Conference and have already been eliminated from post-season contention. Salinas’ final two opportunities to represent the club come at home to Minnesota United this weekend and away at the Seattle Sounders on October 9.
