Residents Count Losses As Rainstorm Destroys Properties Worth Millions In Kwara

Residents in some parts of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital have counted their losses as a rainstorm destroyed properties worth millions of naira on Thursday.

Naija News gathered that residents in Taiwo, Unity, and Itamodu areas of the Ilorin metropolis were not left out of the havoc caused by yesterday’s rainstorm.

It was learned that two occupants of a car narrowly escaped death during the rain when a political signpost fell on their vehicle which was said that started around 3 pm and ended around 5 pm.

The rain was said to have destroyed cars, buildings, electric poles, wires and shops, and political signposts among others.

Several signposts were brought down by the torrential rain blocking the major road in Sawmill, Taiwo, and Unity areas of the metropolis.

The Kwara State Fire Service who confirmed the incident however said no life was lost.

Head of Media and Publicity of the state Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle said that the rainstorm damaged many houses in Taiwo Isale, Unity Road, and Ita Amodu areas among other areas of the town.

He said, “What would have been the worst was the fallen political signposts which fell on a car at Unity Road adding that the occupants of the car had gone down before men of the fire service came to their rescue.”

However, the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in a statement on Friday through his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, sympathised with affected residents and the various areas,

The statement partly read “The governor described the incidents as unfortunate. He is sad about the havoc that the rainstorm wreaked on public and private properties, especially in Ilorin metropolis, Oke Ero, and some other areas.

“The governor is aware of and commends the ongoing efforts of relevant government agencies to evacuate the many fallen signposts and clear the highways for free movement of traffic.

“While the state government will collaborate with the federal government to continually tackle the question of flooding, the government appeals to members of the public to avoid littering the drainages or blocking free flow of water.”
