Recruitment into Army not employment opportunity, says COAS

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, has told Nigerians not to see recruitment into the Nigerian Army as an opportunity to get employment.

Yahaya stressed that recruitment into the Army was different from other jobs, noting that joining the service presented one with an opportunity to defend the territorial integrity of the country.

He stated this on Saturday shortly before kick-starting a 10-kilometre endurance run for candidates undergoing screening to qualify for the 84 Regular Recruits Intake into the Nigerian Army at the Nigerian Army Battle Fitness Centre in Falgore forest, Kano State.

The Army chief also warned that recruitment into the service was not an all-comers affair as it required a lot of sacrifices, selflessness and if need be, the supreme sacrifice.

These were contained in a statement by the Army’s spokesman, Onyema Nwachukwu.

Yahaya advised the candidates to take the screening seriously, as only the best would emerge in the final enlistment. He also advised the personnel conducting the screening exercise to protect their integrity by avoiding any form of compromise.

The statement read in part, “The COAS observed that recruitment into the Nigerian Army should not be perceived as employment opportunity, as is the case in other conventional endeavours of life.

“Elucidating his position, the COAS pointed out, that, unlike other professions, recruitment into the NA is a national call to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Nigeria and therefore requires citizens who are not only physically and medically fit, but also mentally and emotionally stable. “

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff has approved the redeployment of major generals and brigadier generals, among other senior officers, across the Nigerian Army formations and units in the country.

Those affected by the redeployment include some principal staff officers of the Army headquarters, corps commanders, commandants of NA training institutions, brigade commanders, commanding officers, and several others.

A statement by the director of Army Public Relations, on Saturday, said the redeployment was to ensure administrative and operational efficiency in the Nigerian Army amid recent operational successes recorded in combating emerging security challenges.

He added that the redeployment of all appointees would take effect from January 11, 2023.
