Premier League team of the week: Gameweek 22

Gameweek 22 was eventful, wasn’t it?

Liverpool continued to capitulate, Pep Guardiola dropped Kevin De Bruyne for no apparent reason, Harry Kane became Tottenham’s all-time top scorer and Manchester United won the Green Football Cup.

So after all that fun, let’s pick 90min‘s team of the week.

GK: Keylor Navas – Everyone knew this was a brilliant signing when it happened, and our assumptions were proven right on Sunday when Navas put in a storming performance in Forest’s win over Leeds United.

CB: James Tarkowski – Back with Sean Dyche = back putting in storming Premier League performances.

CB: Lisandro Martinez – The World Cup winner went Super Saiyan in order to preserve Man Utd’s narrow lead over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

CB: Nayef Aguerd – The Moroccan was seemingly trying to get on Soccer AM’s ‘Big Tackle’ segment (does anyone else remember that? Just me…ok) during West Ham’s game against Newcastle, putting in brilliant challenge after brilliant challenge at St. James’ Park.

RM: Emerson Royal – Yes, that Emerson Royal. The Brazilian wing-back was utterly fantastic against City on Sunday, keeping Jack Grealish in check throughout Spurs’ win.

CM: Declan Rice – 100% tackles won (3/3), 12 ball recoveries, 3 interceptions – Declan Rice showed against Newcastle why West Ham want a British record fee if he leaves.

CM: Ruben Neves – Showed Liverpool exactly the sort of quality and energy they’re missing in their midfield with his performance on Saturday.

LM: Tete – Well this seems like a brilliant signing, doesn’t it? Signed on a short loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, the Brazilian took to Premier League football like a duck to water at the weekend, impressing with his work rate and ability on the ball in the final third.

RF: Kelechi Iheanacho – One goal and two assists against Aston Villa. Iheanacho looks like he’s finally finding some form at Leicester City.

ST: Harry Kane – Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer. And he did it by scoring the winner against Man City. Beautiful.

LF: Bryan Mbeumo – The 23-year-old has quietly been one of the better players in the Premier League in 2023, and he came good for Brentford once again at the weekend by bagging a goal and an assist.
