PDP Considers Makinde, Oyinlola As Campaign Director For Atiku

2023: Atiku Should Be Extradited To US Over Alleged Corruption - Afegbua

A former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State have emerged as leading contenders for the post of Director-General in the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation for 2023.

The idea of picking a campaign leader from the southwest by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is said to be part of strategies to counter the popularity of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the region.

Sources who spoke on the development however added that Atiku wants the saga with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike resolved before inaugurating the campaign council.

The strategies to be deployed for the 2023 election also formed part of discussions by the PDP Board of Trustees on Wednesday, the source quoted by Punch further revealed.

Pleading anonymity, the source who is a PDP chieftain said: “usually, when running a presidential campaign, it is always good to pick a campaign manager from the region that your major opponent is from.

“When Buhari was running against Jonathan in 2015, he picked Amaechi as his campaign DG. Amaechi was from the Niger Delta just like Jonathan. Similarly, Jonathan picked Ahmadu Ali, who is from the North, as his campaign DG.

“So, the PDP is also considering the South-West for this strategic assignment. You know Atiku won Ondo and Oyo in 2019. Now, Osun is PDP territory as well.”

Oyinlola May Get The Job Over Makinde

Speaking further, the source acknowledged that while both men are fully qualified for the job, Oyinlola may be picked over Makinde.

Apart from experience, the source said Makinde also has hos own re-election bid to focus on.

“Oyinlola is very experienced. He understands Lagos politics as well having served as military governor. Makinde will also be running for a tough governorship re-election and may be too busy to focus on Atiku’s campaign.

“Also, we are waiting for Wike’s input. Wike may probably prefer Makinde because they are close. But these are the two main options,” the chieftain added.

Ayu To Remain As PDP Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) on Wednesday met to deliberate on the crisis rocking the main opposition party.

The BoT meeting of the main opposition party was held under the chairmanship of the party’s advisory organ, Walid Jibrin, at the National Executive Council Hall at the PDP National Secretariat.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi disclosed that the BoT members discussed how to resolve the feud between Atiku and Wike.

He stated that the advisory organ did not discuss calls for the sack of the national chairman, Iyiorcha Ayu.
