Nnamdi Kanu Considers Changing Legal Team

DSS Can’t Manage Nnamdi Kanu's Health – IPOB Leader’s Lawyer Raises Alarm

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu is contemplating overhauling his legal team as he fights for his freedom from the detention of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kanu is considering overhauling his legal team following his dissatisfaction with factions contending to represent him and the group.

There are reports that some groups are claiming to be legally fighting for Kanu’s freedom and IPOB.

The development has led to the emergence of many factions competing against themselves.

A source close to Kanu that spoke with Vanguard on the development on Tuesday said Kanu is worried over the emergence of the groups all claiming to be pursuing the legal interest of IPOB.

With the aim of these groups to fight for the release of Kanu from detention, there are more than three legal factions, however, Kanu recognizes the team headed by a senior lawyer and activist.

The senior lawyer is recognised by the IPOB leader due to his revered position in the profession and the respect that he commands among peers in the bar and the bench.

The senior lawyer has taken steps which have secured some wins for Kanu and IPOB, but some of the lawyers who see themselves as the ‘mainstream Biafran lawyers’ are not pleased that they are left out of the battle to fight for Kanu’s freedom.

There are claims that some leaders in the group are rooting for the inclusion of two of its members who are also lawyers, but they don’t command considerable weight.

The IPOB community members in the South East want the lawyers at the forefront of Kanu’s legal matters because of their seeming popularity in the South East and IPOB circles.

However, a third legal front believed to be operating offshore is said to have opposed the move by their South East counterparts to lead the legal team.

They have asked that they should be allowed to manage the legal team of Kanu, having been at the forefront of his defence before others were brought on board.

A source that spoke with Vanguard said, “What this means is that there is serious infighting among the legal teams and the leader is seriously worried to the point of accusing some of these people of working for pecuniary interest and not IPOB and he is contemplating firing some of those lawyers.”

A close source said, “Some of these people are fighting for superiority, fame and money and not that they can do the job better than what has been done while others are merely using IPOB name and Kanu to fleece people who have been donating towards his cause.”

With the infighting among the legal team, Kanu is considering overhauling the teams but it is not clear how soon.

There are no signs of who would make his preferred team and who he would drop from the legal team.

Kanu, who was ordered to be freed by the Appeal Court a few weeks ago, has been dragged before the Supreme Court by the Federal Government which claimed that his freedom is a concern to national security.
