Nigeria loses over N104bn from energy drinks importation – Group

Nigeria has lost over N104 billion annually from importing energy drinks, a consumer protection group said.

In a statement during the weekend, Olufemi Odebunmi, the convener of Concerned Consumers, frowned at regulatory agencies for not banning the importation of energy drinks into the country despite its debilitating health impact.

According to him, over 300,000 Nigerians would be gainfully employed if the energy drink market grows indigenously without unfair competition from international brands.

It stated that regulatory agencies such as National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and others develop policies to encourage local production of energy drinks.

“An average number of between 1,800 and 2,000 containers of energy drinks are imported into the Country annually. With each container comprising 2,600 cases, at the going price of between N18,000 and N20,000 per case, the estimated loss to the Country is over N104 billion annually”, the group stated.
