The National Librarian, Professor Chinwe Anunobi, has revealed that the Federal Government has digitised the national library in line with technological advancements.
The digitisation, according to Anunobi has helped to adjust and improve the service delivery of the library.
According to a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday, Anunobi stated this during a briefing held to mark her first anniversary in office.
Speaking further in the statement, the national librarian noted that in line with the FG’s digital policy, the national library automated its services and operations to connect the old and new, and to build an informed citizenry, equipped with information about our culture and heritage.
She also stressed that the agency would not be left out of the technological trends.
She said, “The national library is about 57 years old with a consequential 60 years of information resources.
“Some of our resources have deteriorated due to age and usage, but to preserve them, we have engaged in the digitisation of this weak heritage, increased availability leveraging on information and communication technology.
“It is said that when you integrate automation into your workflow, you are not cutting out certain jobs but getting them to operate efficiently,” she said.
Reeling out her achievements, she noted that the agency had designed a virtual library and automated library operations among others.
She added, “We have developed the national repository to preserve our heritage, our library environment is now accessible to the public with building and renovation of state branches, we are enhancing literacy sensitisation to encourage documentation of family heritage in indigenous languages.
