The Mexican national team named the 31-player roster headed to Girona for the final round of friendlies ahead of the World Cup, with Edson Alvarez and Erick Gutierrez headlining the squad.
El Tri will face Iraq on November 9, and Sweden on November 16 at the Montilivi Stadium in Girona, Spain before traveling to Qatar for the international tournament. Head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino revealed he will use the preliminary 31-player list to form the definitieve roster for the World Cup.
Raul Jimenez and Jesus ‘Tecatico’ Corona were both named to the recent roster, despite injuries that have seen them sidelined in the weeks leading up to the World Cup.
Tecatito suffered a broken fibula and a rupture of his ankle ligaments during training with Sevilla in late August, forcing him to undergo surgery. His expected recovery period remains between four to five months, seeing him miss the World Cup. But the Mexican national team stands cautiously optimistic that the player can make his return to the pitch before Qatar, keeping him on any official lists.
Raul Jimenez, on the other hand, saw a decline in activity with Wolves at the start of the 2022/2023 Premier League season, before the club announced he has picked up a groin and adductor issue. He’s currently at the Mexican national team facilities in Mexico City undergoing rehabilitation.
The 31-player preliminary World Cup list did not see many surprises, after a similar list was used during the October international window.
