Matheus Cunha Of Atletico Madrid Joins Wolves On Initial Loan Deal

Atletico Madrid forward, Matheus Cunha will join Premier League side, Wolverhampton Wanderers for an initial loan deal on January 1.

The 23-year-old Brazilian forward, Matheus Cunha is expected to play for Wolves on loan from January until the end of the 2022-2023 season.

Afterward, Cunha will sign a permanent deal with the Premier League club which could rise to 40 million euros. The permanent deal will keep him at the club for four years.

Cunha is Wolves’ first signing since Julen Lopetegui, who managed Sevilla between 2019 and 2022, became the coach of the club on 5 November 2022.

After signing for the Premier League side, Cunha said: “I’m really excited to be part of this group and to be part of this club – it’s a big club.”

“I’m excited to play in the Premier League, to play in Wolverhampton, and I think the most important point is that I’m happy like a kid,” added Cunha.

“[Lopetegui’s] a big coach, he has a big mentality. He told me about Wolverhampton having a big project and I believe in it a lot, and I believe in him.”

Matheus Cunha started his professional career in 2017 with the Swiss club Sion. He later played for RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin in Germany before joining Spanish club Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2021. In 54 appearances for Atletico Madrid, he scored seven goals.

Despite not making the roster for the Qatar World Cup, he has eight senior caps and was a member of the Brazil Under-23 team that won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
