Legendary manager Dick Advocaat disagrees with former Dutch internationals Marcel Van Basten and Andy Van De Meyden, who blamed Calvin Bassey for Ajax’s 3-2 defeat to Feyenoord on Sunday.
Bassey played from start to finish as Ajax failed to close the gap on the leaders who ran away with the maximum at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Following the defeat, Van Der Meyder, who made 91 appearances for Ajax between 1997-2003, said the Nigerian did little or nothing to help his team.
van Basten echoed the statement, noting that Bassey is not confident on the ball.
In his reaction, Advocaat stated that Bassey was the best player at Ibrox last season for a reason and should be allowed time to adapt.
“He was Rangers’ best player last season,” Advocaat told Glasgow Times.
“So, you can’t say he can’t play football, but he really needs time.
“His manager John Heitinga has pointed out that to get the best out of him, you must have other defenders who can help him out if he loses the ball.
“He’s a good defender first and foremost — Ajax didn’t buy him for his football abilities,” The former Dutch national team coach said.
Bassey has made 23 league appearances in his debut season.
