Inter Miami head coach Phil Neville signs new contract through 2023 MLS season

Inter Miami have tied down head coach Phil Neville to a new contract through the 2023 MLS season, the club announced Monday.

Neville’s deal was due to expire at the end of this year but after guiding the Herons back into the MLS Cup Playoffs with a sixth-place finish in the Eastern Conference, the Englishman has been kept on for at least another season.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with Phil and build on the foundation put in place this year,” Inter Miami chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson said in a club press release.

“He has helped Inter Miami build a winning culture, and we feel our processes, collaboration and communication have begun to bear fruit. We are ready for the road ahead and are confident we are heading in the right direction.”

Neville has overseen 72 games across all competitions since taking charge of Inter Miami in January 2021, holding a 28-32-12 record. Though he was unable to guide the Herons to the Playoffs in his first campaign, doing so in his second definitely goes down as a positive given the level of roster turnover at the club.

“It’s a great honor to stay at Inter Miami. I’ve always thought long-term, I’ve always thought that I want to be at this club for a long time,” said Neville. “I think we’re in the early growth period of this Club, the early building process and I feel as if we’ve made great strides over the last two years, but by no means is the journey finished. In 2022 we finished sixth in the league, we got into Playoffs. But that’s not success, that’s progression. The expectation is to win.”
