Hirving Lozano is set to feature in his second World Cup for Mexico. After an iconic performance in 2018, scoring the 1-0 winner against Germany and leading El Tri to the Round of 16, he returns to the international stage with a desire for greatness.
But Napoli’s frontman admitted he’s not the same player that featured in Russia.
“I lived my first World Cup in 2018, and it was incredible. But now, to live another, I’m coming back in a more mature manner, in a personal and footballistic sense. I am going to try to enjoy it to the fullest, to deliver more incredible moments,” said Lozano to 90min.
The past four years have seen Lozano make the jump from PSV Einhoven to Napoli, to chase new ceilings. In his two seasons with the Eredivisie team, the player lifted the league title in 2017/2018, while concluding the campaign as the team’s highest scorer with 17 goals. He also saw Champions League action, alongside El Tri teammate Erick Guttierez.
In 2019, Chucky transfered to the Serie A giants, singing a five-year contract for a reported fee of €42 million to make him Napoli’s most expensive transfer at the time and the highest fee paid for any Mexican player.
He has since shattered records with the club.
“The truth is that I am very proud of what I have done. I am the first Mexican to win a title in Italy, the first Mexican to score a goal in Italy, the player with the most appearances in Italy. So, I think it’s something very beautiful and very significant for me because no one had done it and, well, it’s a bit of history that I’ve done, thank God,” he said.
Lozano has made six appearances for Napoli so far this season, also seeing spells on the sidelines due to injury last season. But the World Cup stands as an opportunity to regain momentum.
