IGP Gives Update On Possible Terror Attacks In Abuja

IGP Redeploys Top Officers In Major Police Shake-up (Full List)

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has said the terror alerts issued by the United Kingdom and the United States were blown out of proportion.

The country’s number one police officer stated this on Thursday during a media briefing organised by the Presidential Media Team, at Aso Rock in Abuja.

Baba said the Nigerian Government never dismissed the alerts about possible attacks in Abuja, saying that the warnings only made Nigerians apprehensive about the situation.

The IGP, however, disclosed that some suspects were arrested by security agencies, adding that those arrested will be charged to court soon.

He said: “Government has never dismissed it as an alarm, but we only said it was blown or made in such a way that our people became apprehensive about the situation and the way it was done,.

”The embassies have their own responsibilities to their citizens and they can make their advice and the government has not dismissed what has happened, because they have also informed us of what they foresee as threats.

“Sometimes, these threats or things happen but nobody has dismissed it as mere alarm, and a lot of efforts have been made, like you said, to douse tension.

“Actually, arrests have been made — those we believe are planning to commit a crime in whatever form were arrested. Those arrested will be charged to court by any of the services that have them.”

IGP Speaks On Reported Campaigns Clashes

Ahead of the 2022 general elections, the police boss warned politicians against violent campaigns and rallies across the country.

Baba gave the warning 24-hours the campaign convoy of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, was attacked in Maidguri, Borno State.

Also there have been reports of violent clashes at campaign rallies organised by political across the country in the past one month.

Speaking on the development, Baba asked political parties to always abide by the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of rallies.

The Police boss also advised politicians to carry the Force along when organising their campaigns and rallies.

He said: ”There are laid-down means, ways, and procedures to do rallies and campaigns.

”On our part, we have gone out to appeal to politicians to play the game by the rules, and at the same time, allow us to regulate political processions, campaigns, and rallies, to avoid clashes and so forth.”
