Gunmen abduct two Ogun residents, engage police in gun duel

Three members of a kidnap syndicate who abducted two residents of Abeokuta in Ogun State have been arrested.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said it was reported at the Sabo Ilupeju divisional headquarters that two abductees, who had gone to work at Abule Oba Alamala along Ayetoro road in Abeokuta, were kidnapped by some gunmen on Tuesday.

Oyeyemi said the DPO of Sabo Ilupeju division immediately mobilized his men, who he said were joined by men of the Nigerian Army and those of the So-Safe Corps, as “they jointly embarked on aggressive bush combing in search of the victims and the suspects.”

While the search was ongoing, Oyeyemi added that the operatives were informed that the suspects had contacted the families of the victims and asked them to bring an amount of money to them somewhere in the area.

“With the information, the operatives swiftly moved to the area and laid ambush for the hoodlums. Not quite long, the hoodlums appeared to collect the ransom and the operatives engaged them in a gun duel,” he said.

As they were about to be overpowered, Oyeyemi said the gunmen fled, but they were chased by the operatives, leading to the arrest of three of them.

He explained that other members of the gang escaped with gunshot injuries, saying “this made them abandon their victims, who were rescued unhurt and reunited with their families.”

The suspects were identified by the police as Abubakar Sodiq, 26, Ibrahim Kuaki, 24 and Muhammadu Dio, 22.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the anti-kidnapping unit of state CIID, adding that the escaped members of the gang will be hunted and brought to justice.
