French Football Federation provide update on Didier Deschamps’ future

The French Football Federation are confident that Didier Deschamps will remain as manager despite World Cup final defeat.

Deschamps lead Les Bleus to a second consecutive final and was a penalty shootout away from securing back-to-back World Cup crowns, with Argentina emerging victorious in Qatar after a breathtaking 120 minutes of football.

Much has been made of Deschamps’ future as France manager following the tournament’s conclusion, with many suspecting he could finally step back from his role after 10 years amid speculation that Zinedine Zidane is ready to take over.

But Noel Le Graet, president of the FFF, has spoken on the matter in an interview with Ouest-France.

“I haven’t thought about the fact that Didier could leave. Some journalists want things to change, but I’m not easily swayed with regard to that kind of thing,” he explained.

“Didier has done a good job, he has the choice, and I think we’ll come to an agreement.”

Deschamps took the job as France manager in 2012 having been capped 103 times for Les Bleus himself during a sensational playing career that included captain the country to World Cup glory in 1998. Despite rough spells along the way, his tenure has been overwhelmingly successful.

France were Euro 2016 runners- up and went one better two years later, winning the 2018 World Cup which meant that Deschamps joined a select group of individuals to have lifted the trophy as both a player and a manager. His team also won the 2020/21 Nations League.
