Former AIG, Joseph Mbu denies terrorism, importing fake police charges

Former Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Mbu has denied establishing and arming illegal police in his community, Abia community of Etung LGA in Cross River State.

He has also denied terrorising his community, intimidating political party supporters or being an overlord.

In an interview to debunk various allegations against him, Mbu said as a very senior and retired police officer, he usually received even servicing police officers from Abuja and elsewhere who stopped over and he would accommodate many of them.

“As a result of my presence and contributions, my community is adjudged to be the safest place, so that you can forget a thing and still return to pick it.

“My accusers are merely afraid because I stand for the truth and block many from cornering proceeds from community cocoa plantations..”

A few days ago, an NGO, National Youths for Good Governance (NYGG) called on the Inspector General of Police Baba Alkali to impel Mbu to obey a court order for trial over alleged murders and violence.

In their petition to the Inspector General, signed by Samuel, Coordinator and Ikona Ubi, Secretary, they also urged him to order the arrest of the former AIG.

They alleged that on 2nd November 2022, Justice Ukpai Ibritham of the high court of the state issued a bench warrant for Mbu’s arrest and detention in suit number HC/40c/2021 following his alleged attempt to frustrate his trial by persistently refusing to appear in court.

The group alleged that Mbu imported weapons with hired thugs to cause violence and intimidate voters.

They also alleged that Mbu has a concentration camp where his armed men who parade the town as policemen manhandle and detain supporters of the ruling APC.

In another petition to the state governor by the state campaign committee of APC, signed by its spokesman, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, they called on the state Governor to use his powers to arrest Mbu, alleging further that, apart from disobeying a court order and arming fake policemen, Mbu is sending threat messages to stalwarts of the ruling party, including himself.
