Family debunks abducted senator’s rumoured release, death

The family of Mr Nelson Effiong, a senator who represented Eket Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State, at the 8th Assembly, has debunked rumours making the rounds about the former lawmaker.

It could be recalled that the ex-Senator was kidnapped at his lounge along Oron Road, Uyo, the state capital on Sunday, September 5, 2021, about seven weeks ago.

Thereafter, there were agitations for his release even as the Commissioner of Police, CP Andrew Amiengheme, reassured of commitment for his safe return and the apprehension of culprits.

Reports on social media however claim he had been released while another claimed he died in captivity.

However, Senator Effiong’s family when contacted dismissed the reports describing them as ‘fictitious.’

The younger brother, Prince Effiong who spoke on behalf of the family said, “I have heard the rumour that he has been killed. He is alive. He has not been killed. When somebody dies, there is no way you can hide it. Also, he has not been released. The family is also saying that he has not been released.

“You can quote me, that I said the report that he has been released is not authentic.”
