Having served in different ministerial positions, Droupadi Murmu has been elected as the new President of India.

The 64-year-old former classroom teacher who hailed from the Mayurbhanj district said she had never thought about becoming a candidate for the exalted position.

Murmu’s emergence makes her the 15th President of India and the second female president in the country’s history, Naija News understands.

The first woman president goes by the name Pratibha Patil.

Naija News understands that the president-elect from the minority Santhal tribe was endorsed by over half of parliamentarians and state legislators.

Marmu was said to have started her career as a teacher before venturing into politics in recent years. She held several ministerial positions and eventually became Governor of Jharkhand in May 2015, the first woman to hold the position.

“As a tribal woman from remote Mayurbhanj district, I had not thought about becoming the candidate for the top post”, she had said earlier before her declaration as the president of India.

President of OFBJP West Africa, Sanjay Srivastava said the victory had brought about significant social change. Srivastava expressed confidence that Murmu’s election would translate to the achievement of remarkable feats.

“We hereby congratulate her and the entire India nation, we look forward to a progressive nation”, NAN quoted Srivastava as saying.
