Ese Brume Wins Another Gold For Team Nigeria, Breaks Commonwealth Record

Long jumper, Ese Brume has added to the medal haul of Team Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

The Nigerian athlete on Sunday evening recorded a leap of 7.00m to clinch the gold medal. She had earlier made a leap of 6.99m to shatter the existing record of 6.97m set by Australia’s Bronwyn Thompson at Melbourne in 2006.

Her 7.00m jump makes her the first woman to jump that far in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

The win by the 26-year-old star pushes Nigeria to 12 gold medals at the ongoing sports event.

Brume defeated Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl and Deborah Acquah from Ghana, who could only manage leaps of 6.95m and 6.94m respectively to occupy second and third positions.

Team Nigeria at the end of Day 10, occupies the seventh position on the medals table with 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze medals.

Tobi Amusan Strikes Gold

Nigerian track and field athlete, Oluwatobiloba Ayomide, better known as Tobi Amusan had earlier earned herself more respect after finishing a race in 12.30s count on Sunday at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to win gold ahead of her competitors.

Naija News reports that the 25-year-old Ijebu-Ode-born athlete made it through the women’s 100m hurdles, defending her initial record at the ongoing event.

Amusan on Sunday clocked a flash timing of 12.30s(-0.2) to win a pristine gold medal. Her 12.30s timing was also a new record at the Games.

Amusan based on records is the first world champion to win gold in the event and the first Nigerian athlete to be crowned champion at all levels of athletics in the same year.

The likes of Jamaican duo Danielle Williams, Megan Tapper, England’s Cindy Sembre, Michelle Jenneke of Australia, and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas all came behind Amusan to the touchline.
