Erik ten Hag issues warning to Alejandro Garnacho after Aston Villa victory

Erik ten Hag has warned Alejandro Garnacho he needs to keep working hard and maintain a positive attitude if he wants to start for Manchester United.

Garnacho was his team’s hero against Aston Villa, coming on with his team 2-1 down and setting up two goals to give his side a 4-2 victory.

The 18-year-old impressed against Real Sociedad too, scoring the only goal of the match, and many are calling for Ten Hag to start him from now on.

While the manager was pleased with the Argentine’s performance though, he says there are still areas the winger needs to improve in and that he needs to work hard on and off the pitch if he wants to start.

“It was good that he came on and showed that performance and had that impact in the game, to be able to assist, make the dribbles and run behind,” the Dutchman said after the match.

“There are some things he has to improve, for instance when we go long to go for the second balls. He still has things to learn but quite obviously we are happy with his development and he can contribute to the team.

“It depends on his approach, his attitude. When he keeps working then yes, it is possible (for him to play more). He wants to improve every day. He has to do the right things in his lifestyle. He has the capability.”

Ten Hag’s mention of attitude comes shortly after United midfielder Bruno Fernandes highlighted that Garnacho had been forced to undergo a mentality shift after being called out for having a poor attitude during pre-season.
