Erik ten Hag challenges Marcus Rashford to be more clinical in front of goal

Erik ten Hag has challenged Marcus Rashford to be more ruthless in front of goal as he looks to improve his side’s scoring record.

United are fifth in the table going into this weekend’s clash with Newcastle, but have scored less than any other side in the top seven with just 15 goals to their name so far.

24-year-old Rashford has shown signs of being back to his best this campaign, scoring five goals in ten appearances. However, just three of these goals have come in the Premier League and the England international missed an array of chances in Thursday’s Europa League clash with Omonia Nicosia.

New United boss Ten Hag praised Rashford for his performances so far this season, but also called on him to offer more cutting edge in the games to come.

“He did a lot of things well but he knows he has to be more clinical and he had to score a goal,” said Ten Hag. “When you have such good movements and make such good combinations, good actions, then you have to finish.”

However, the Dutch coach also stressed the importance of the rest of his side chipping in with goals. When asked if United had a player capable of scoring 20 goals a season, Ten Hag said: “I think we have in our squad players who can score that number of goals. But I think we also need something from midfield and the defensive department.”

United face Newcastle at Old Trafford on Sunday looking to break into the top four for the first time this season, having recovered from a rocky start to the campaign.
