Drama As RCCG Members Protest Killing Of Deborah Samuel

Reactions Trail Killing Of Female Student In Sokoto For 'Blasphemy'

Members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Central Parish) in Abuja on Sunday protested the killing of a 200 Level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, Deborah Samuel.

Naija News recalls that Samuel was lynched to death and burnt by some Muslim students of the institution over alleged blasphemy.

During the protest, the demonstrators protested the killing of Deborah and other Christians in the country with their lips sealed with sellotape.

The protesters, who refused to speak to journalists, were led by the Regional Pastor of the Parish and other senior pastors of the parish.

Some inscriptions on the placards carried by them included, ‘Stop the killing! God is watching’; ‘No killings in the name of religion’, ‘Don’t defend the indefensible’; and ‘Let’s live together in peace.’

In an interview with reporters, a Pastor of the church said the decision to seal their mouths was a silent protest against killings in the name of God, adding that it was an “order from above.”

Meanwhile, Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has called for the immediate sack of the Chief Imam of the National Mosque in Abuja, Ibrahim Maqari.

Following the sad incident, the Islamic cleric insinuated that Deborah was responsible for her death by crossing one of the red lines of Islam.

Soyinka described Maqari’s statements as unfortunate and sad, adding that the cleric has backed the killing of the female student with his words.

The playwright also stated that the Islamic cleric has directed his followers to take laws into their own hands through his comments

Soyinka stated these on Saturday during the launch of the biography of the late Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
