The international medical humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières otherwise called Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has expressed shock over the killing of one of its staff, Mohammed Hassan by armed persons in Zamfara State northwest Nigeria.
A statement by MSF on Wednesday said Mohammad Hassan, a 37-year-old nurse, employed by MSF in Shinkafi, Zamfara State in northwest Nigeria was killed on October 2 when armed individuals opened fire on the public vehicle in which he was travelling.
The statement said the entire organization remained “shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the death of our colleague. Our thoughts at this tragic time are with his family and friends. We are supporting them in these difficult circumstances.”
The statement added that Mohammad’s tragic death was an example of the rising violence in northwest Nigeria that is deeply affecting the lives of the population and has driven thousands of people from their homes.
The statement said: “MSF condemns the attack and calls for the respect of civilians and humanitarian workers.
“In Zamfara state, MSF provides medical humanitarian assistance to the populations of Anka, Gusau, and Zurmi.
In Shinkafi, MSF teams run a 33-bed therapeutic feeding center and an inpatient pediatric department in Shinkafi general hospital. We also provide mental health consultations and provide care for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.”
