The Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has condemned the killing of Deborah Samuel, a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education over alleged blasphemy.
Naija News reports that the governor’s spokesman, Muhammad Bello, made this known in a statement on Thursday.
Bello said Tambuwal described the gruesome murder of the female student as barbaric during a meeting with Christian leaders and heads of security agencies in the state.
The governor’s spokesman said Tambuwal had cut his political engagements to return to the state to meet the stakeholders following the sad incident.
The meeting, which was held at the Government House, was attended by the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Nuhu Iliya, and other officials of the association.
He said: “Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state cut short his engagements in Abuja, the nation’s capital following the killing of Miss Deborah Samuel, a student of the College of Education, Sokoto; and returned to Sokoto where he held a closed-door meeting with heads of security agencies in the state as well as the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Fr. Nuhu Iliya at the Government House.”
Bello added that Governor Tambuwal had directed the state’s Ministry of Higher Education and relevant security agencies to investigate the matter.
Recall that some students of the college, on Thursday, lynched Deborah Samuel over an allegation of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The deceased was stoned to death and later burnt by the angry mob, who are believed to be students of the college.
The college authorities immediately announced the closure of the school and ordered students to vacate the campus.
Hours later, the police in the state announced the arrest of two of the suspects.
