D.C. United announce departures of Lucy Rushton and Victor Lonchuk

D.C. United’s off-season reshuffle has begun with the departures of general manager Lucy Rushton and first-team performance director Victor Lonchuk.

The Black and Red endured a disappointing 2022 MLS campaign, finishing bottom of the Eastern Conference and overall standings with just 27 points – at least seven fewer than any other team.

United are preparing for their first full season under head coach Wayne Rooney, who joined in mid-July and oversaw a record of just nine points in 14 games.

“We want to thank Lucy and Victor for their contributions over the past seasons. We wish both of them success in their future endeavors,” D.C. United co-chairmen Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan said in a club press release.

Rushton joined DC United in April 2021 following a successful spell with Atlanta United. Lonchuk, meanwhile, was only appointed ahead of the 2022 season.

It’s understood the club has brought in an outside firm to spearhead the search for a new general manager, which is expected to be conducted on a global level. The new GM will undertake a broad variety of responsibilities, including roster building, talent identification, and player recruitment, while reporting directly to the club’s ownership.

The announcement of a new performance director is also expected in the near future.

“The club’s on-field performance this season was unacceptable. We owe it to our supporters, our players, and our greater community to compete at a high level,” Levien and Kaplan added.

“We are focused on bringing leadership that will work closely with head coach Wayne Rooney and our management team to build a squad that once again competes at the top echelon of Major League Soccer. In order to accomplish this and to evolve as a club, we felt it was necessary to make this decision and bring in new leadership.”
