Christmas Eve Tanker Explosion Kills Nine, Injures 40 In South Africa

A petrol tanker explosion reportedly killed no fewer than nine people on Christmas eve day in Boksburg, South Africa.

The incident which happened in the eastern city of Johannesburg also had scores of residents numbering about forty injured, Naija News understands.

Reports said that emergency services immediately attended to the scene to put the fire under control while casualties were evacuated.

The tanker, transporting liquefied petroleum gas, “got stuck under a bridge close to a hospital and houses.

“Firefighters were called to extinguish the flames. Unfortunately, the tanker exploded,” a spokesman for the emergency services in the region, William Ntladi told reporters.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian man identified simply as Chinwuko Ugochukwu Augustine has died after he was allegedly attacked by taxi drivers in South Africa.

Reports claimed that some Nigerians were attacked by taxi drivers in Benoni, a town in Ekurhuleni municipality, Gauteng province on December 9, 2022.

The victims were reportedly wiped with machetes in front of a police station and were left with serious injuries.

Chinwuko sustained multiple stab wounds during the attack and was rushed to Glenwood Hospital where he died on Wednesday, December 21.

Some Nigerians who were displeased with the attack gathered outside the Benoni Police Station on Wednesday night to protest the killing.

They were later dispersed with rubber bullets. The Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Noxolo Kweza who confirmed the incident said that the case is being investigated.

She said, “No one has been arrested as yet, but a docket has been opened pending investigation.

“We are calling on anyone with information that could help police on the whereabouts of the suspect.”
