Chelsea beat Brighton in behind-closed-doors friendly

Graham Potter’s Chelsea saw off former employers Brighton in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday.

The Blues had been scheduled to face Liverpool on Sunday evening but saw their match postponed due to policing shortages related to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Similarly, Brighton had been due to play Crystal Palace on Saturday but also saw their fixture delayed.

To keep fit, the two sides met on Saturday at Brighton’s Amex Stadium in a behind-closed-doors friendly which saw both teams play a mixture of senior players and academy talents, and it was Chelsea who came out on top.

Summer signing Carney Chukwuemeka, who is still awaiting his first-team debut following his £20m move from Aston Villa, netted twice for Potter’s side to secure the victory.

It is understood a number of senior players, predominantly those with international call-ups coming, were given the day off, meaning Chelsea’s squad was largely made up of fringe players and those who did not see significant minutes against Salzburg in midweek.

That meant Chukwuemeka got the chance to impress alongside the likes of Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, Christian Pulisic and Deadline Day signing Denis Zakaria, who is also waiting for his maiden appearance for the Blues.

Chelsea are due to get back in competitive action on October 1 with a trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.

As for Brighton, who are yet to name a permanent successor to Potter, their next test is an away meeting with Liverpool on the same date.
