Cheers As 130 OAU Students Bag First Class Honours

Despite the eight months of strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which affected studies across board, the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) would be graduating no fewer than one hundred and thirty students with a First Class Honour.

The varsity Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adebayo Bamire, confirmed this during a press conference on Monday, December 5, 2022, in Ile-Ife.

Speaking at the event which heralds the 46th convocation ceremony of the university, Bamire said at least 636 students of OAU would graduate with 3rd class.

He noted that out of 5,852 graduands, 130 made first class and 1,323 made the second class upper division. Among them, he said 1,991 made lower division while 636 graduands finished with 3rd class and 34 graduated with a pass.

The VC said the impact of the ASUU strike was mitigated and that it only affected teaching. Bamire said OAU placed much premium on the welfare, success and progress of its students, “hence the urgent need to graduate our students whose results have been approved by the University Senate, almost immediately after the suspension of strike by ASUU.”

On his part, a Professor of International Relations who is also the chairman of the university’s ceremonial committee, Charles Ugochukwu-Ukeje, said OAU remained committed to its core mandate of producing human capital for the nation.
