Champions League draw: Chelsea, Man City & Real Madrid learn quarter-final opponents
The best clubs left in the tournament learned their opponents for the quarterfinal and semifinal matches of the Champions League on Friday.
With some mixed round of 16 matches, the drama is certain to pick up, with few of those matches delivering the turmoil fans of Europe’s top club competition have grown accustomed to.
Champions Real Madrid remain the team to beat after they saw off Liverpool but Manchester City, Napoli and Bayern Munich among others have designs on lifting the trophy in the final in Turkey.
The draw went as follows.
- Confirmed UCL quarter-final and semi-final draws
The first tie drawn on Friday is a repeat of a quarter-final from last year’s competition. Chelsea, who saw off Borussia Dortmund to reach the last eight, will face current European champions Real Madrid, who beat English opposition Liverpool last time out.
Inter, who are clearly in second place behind Napoli in the battle for the Serie A title, has been paired with Benfica of Portugal, who excelled throughout the group stage before crushing Club Brugge of Belgium.
There was no easy draw for Manchester City, who will take on perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for a spot in the last four.
The final matchup pits AC Milan against Napoli in an all-Italian contest.
