We are disappointed to not give Todd Boehly a winning start – Azpilicueta
In the first game under the American’s era, Chelsea went 2-0 up courtesy of a brace from record signing Romelu Lukaku but were pegged back by a Francisco Trincao 79th-minute effort and a 97th-minute header by Conor Coady.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Azpilicueta admitted that the team played on the day, especially in front of new owner Boehly.
The Spanish defender said: “The pressure is always there. You have to accept it. Every point is important. Now we have to start better.
“We used to be a solid team, now we are conceding a lot of goals. That has put ourselves in a difficult position. The team has been completely out of the process.
“Our focus has been on the pitch. Of course, we are disappointed not to give the first win for Mr Boehly. It is out of our hands so not worth wasting energy on that.”
Azpilicueta wants FA Cup trophy, Champions League spot
Azpilicueta also berated the squad’s recent form that has seen them win just one of their last five league matches.
The Chelsea captain noted that their recent poor form hurt their chances of qualifying for the Champions League as well as the upcoming FA Cup final against Liverpool.
“We were leading 2-0 so to drop two points in this way is very disappointing. Of course, the taste of the game is bad,” Azpilicueta said.
“We are conceding too many goals in the last couple of games which is putting us in a difficult position in the race for the Champions League.
“Other teams are winning and we are not getting as many points as we should. We have to get up together and have a good last few weeks. It is in our hands and we have an FA Cup final to play.”
The Blues will then host Leicester City and relegated Watford at the Stamford Bridge for their last two league matches of the 2021/22 season.
