Barcelona confirm Frenkie de Jong & Memphis Depay injuries

Barcelona have confirmed that both Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay have suffered hamstring injuries while on international duty with Netherlands.

De Jong and Memphis were both in the starting XI for the Nations League win over Poland last Thursday. The former was withdrawn at half-time and the latter around seven minutes into the second as the Oranje won 2-0 in Warsaw.

Neither player was then involved in the squad for the subsequent Nations League victory over Belgium on Sunday night back home in Amsterdam.

Now that they have returned to club duty, Barcelona medical tests carried out on Monday afternoon have revealed hamstring issues for each. Recovery timeframes have not yet been disclosed.

A statement from the club explained: “Tests carried out have confirmed hamstring injuries for both Frenkie de Jong and Memphis.

“Midfielder Frenkie de Jong has an elongation of the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh. He is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.

“Striker Memphis has an injury to the biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. He is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”

The news comes as a blow for Barcelona coach Xavi, who has started De Jong in each of the club’s last two La Liga games. Memphis has also started both of those same matches, having initially been out of favour and left on the bench earlier in the campaign.

Barça are next in action on Saturday with a trip to Mallorca, followed quickly by a Champions League away trip against Inter at San Siro.
